  • Query regarding Re-entry permit validity

I'm a medical student, have a green card since 26th April or 2006. I've been visiting US for few months every now and then, once after over a year with re-entry permit. This time I have been outside US for over a year and will be returning to US after 5 months, a total of about 17 months. I have a re-entry permit this time too, and has a validity of 2 years. This time, I will be staying in US without need to go abroad since my studies are finished here. My query is regarding a clause that if a LPR is outside of US for 4 out of 5 years, the validity of re-entry permit is limited to 1 year. I have been out of US for more than 4 years out of last 5 year due to my studies, but i was granted a re-entry permit with 2 year validation date. Is the validity automatically reduced or it should it is what's on the permit? Will i be declared out of state when i go to US this time? I have a reason of being outside of US for so long though, will that be considered? Also, what do i need to have with me when I go to US this time? Any letters from my college stating my course and dates will be of any help, or any letters from place that i worked briefly for work experience? Thank you.

A reentry permit can be used to reenter US after a year or more of travel by lawful permanent resident . From the date of its issue the permit is valid for two years . Permit is valid only for a year in case you intend to stay longer.I would recommend you to check with the closest consulate or embassy about letter to take back in support for GC eligibility.
