Emmigration - do I need to apply again ??

This is a bit of a long shot but Im after finding out your views on the following...

I emmigrated to Australia some 25 years ago but returned to the UK after a short period there. I was only very very young at the time but my mother has explained to me that we had full residency ( not citizenship though ).

I was wondering wether this would affect/support my application for a permanent skilled visa. ( do I even need one ).

Your thoughts would be appreciated

There is a resident return visa that may be applicable to your circumstances. However, without having all of the infromation it is impossible to say whether or not that will be available to you. You mention applying for PR throught the skilled migration scheme.
