  • Transfered Back to India - Custom Duty

    Hello Friends,

I am in US on L1 and when I return (transfer back to India) company pays for relocation expenses to India. I have an LCD 52" TV (recently bought) and some electronic stuff which i love to take them back.

I was trying to understand the different components of this LCD TV reaching home.

    1. How much would it actually cost for shipping with insurance ($1800 TV)
    2. How much will be custom duty charges this LCD TV,
    3. Will the duty be on $1800 or the price for 52" LCD TV which Customs department have.
    4. What are my options for getting PAL content viewable in this TV.

    Thanks a lot

It is not worthwhile shipping this TV to India. Sell here in US for whatever you can and buy a new one in India. Believe me, you will save a lot of hassle. (After all these, if the TV is broken, cracked or simply damaged so that it does not work?)

Reading this post reminded me of my past experience. I was moving couple of years ago and had a glass table worth may be 100 bucks. The move was handled by my employer and the movers came and packed everything except the table. I was curious and asked them the reason. They said another specialist will come and pack the glass table.

Out of curiosity, I asked how much would it cost the company? A whooping $$350!!! Somehow, I felt not to misuse my relocation and got rid of the table.

The reason I bring it up is if it costs $350 for packing a table to move in the US, a TV move overseas could cost a lot more as they will have to pack it, crate it, have moisture absorbers packed if it is being sent by a ship. All this without even the customs in the picture.

Definitely not worth it. You can only hope that the TV gets damaged and the insurance will pay for it at some pre determined rate of $3/lb or so unless you purchase a separate coverage of the expensive items.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
