  • Felony?

Hi all. I am trying to find info on the equivalent charges in the US.
In Australian terms 1 charge is called Theft (penalty = conviction + $1200 fine.) the other is Attempt to obtain property by deception (penalty= conviction + 250hrs community service) (both now over 16 yrs old).

Are either/all of these classed as a felony in US terms and does anyone know if these carry over if one were to come to live in the US. A visitor visa has previously been issued and entered without problem.

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

    Thanks

This is the reply from a police officer ...

        ...

Generally theft charges depending on what was stolen and its value get downgrade to what is called a disorderly persons offense NOT a felony in that sense and if a visa was already aproved chances are that person will not be cecked a second time.
