Hello, please help with an advice

I started my application with company A as a sponsor. Currently I am working at company B that issued me H1B but did not applied for greencard because I already have had application with company A.
Within three months my H1B will expire and I need either an H1b extension or EAD.
My question: is it OK to apply for EAD instead of H1B extension since I exhausted all 6 years with H1?

Did you already file 485? You cannot just apply for EAD without that.
