Change H1 to EAD

I have my H1 Valid until Jan 2014 and i got my EAD Jan 2012. Now my employer is asking me to change into EAD and he initiate to cancel my H1. The reason he stated is that now a days the queries on H1 B employment is very high.

Is there any catch that my employer is trying me to change into EAD or it is ok.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
