GC question

Hello experienced members,

Does it matter in which status your spouse is when you are applying for the GC, because I want to apply jointly for both of us? Does your spouse should be in dependent status only or can be in H1 also and keep working untill GC comes.

The spouse can be on independent status and maintain it throughout the process but will not get H1 6+ year extension

I assume if I file jointly with spouse we both get the green card and EAD and we do not need H1 after that....then how the 6+ year extension comes into picture...please clear that..I appreciate your help
