Two applications for GC, possible?

My wife has her GC being processed by her employer. Due to the recent priority dates changes her application is now in the 485 status, and my name is included in it.
My wife has not yet received the receipt for her application, and from the news on the web it may be a long time before she may get it.

In the meanwhile I am reaching my H1 6yrs limit next year, and have not started on my own GC.
Can I start my own GC application now, even though I am on my wifes 485? I am not sure whether I will be able to maintain my status to work if I dont start my GC.

Please let me know your opinions / experiences.

since you are reaching your H1 limit, applying for labor will not really help you, as you would either need a labor pending for at least 365 days or approved I-140 for extension.

depending on how much time is left you need to decide.

I guess you will move to AOS status by using EAD.
