  • When can you leave company after getting physical Green card

I have worked with this company for 2 years and recently received my physical green card as my country's I-485 filing was current. I did not even get an EAD, i got my GC directly. I have no contract with my company. When can I leave my company? I just received a full time offer.

Is the 180 days after I-485 approval still valid in my case or can I switch companies since I have the physical card. I also do not intend on becoming a US citizen as my country does not allow dual citizenship. What should I do please suggest........

Thank you all in advance for sharing your thoughts.

GC is for permanent employment and it is suggested you work for at least 6 months after getting the GC. Many people take the risk and switch earlier but may not be worth it if you intend to become a citizen in the future.

But what if I do not intend to become a US citizen. I also do not plan on staying in the us after the expiration of my GC which is 10 years.........please suggest. is it alright to leave my current employer then......

      Thanks,

Nothing can stop you from switching if that is the case. But 10 years is a long time and your priorities might change.

Your choice. No legal restriction other than that.

To further elaborate my case. I filed my GC under EB2 category as I have a masters (MBA) and Bachelors(BBA) from the US. Please suggest?

          Thanks,

What/when/weher or the category does not matter. As GC is typically for future employment, USCIS expects the person to work for the employer rather than misrepresented the intent all the way until they got the GC.

It is okay to get fired or laid off and then find a new job with citizenship. All that matters is only if one is interested in a citizenship.

I hope it won't cause any problem incase I have to renew my green card after 10 years. I saw the I-90 Form and it does not ask anything about current employer and previous employer. Would renewing Green Card after 10 years be a problem incase I switch employer right now??........

Thank you for the prompt responses.

              Cheers,
