How long can I wait to apply for GC?

My second term of H1B expires in November 2011. How late can I start GC process? I understand earlier the better, but given current economic situation, isn't it better to wait if possible? Also, my company has suddenly turned around from its prior commitment to sponsor GC so I don't want to push them.

365 days prior to 6 years of H1b at the very least for filing labor which involves a process of 3 months before filing.
