If processing abroad, you only submit I-130 and G-325A for each of you, along with supporting documents.

But if you process your wife's conversion from another type of visa entry while she is in the U.S., then the I-485 can be submitted at the same time as the I-130.

If you asked the Embassy and USCIS how to apply for a Green Card, the I-485 response presumed that your wife was already in the U.S. While abroad you are applying for her spousal visa, not Green Card. But the Green Card will be mailed to your U.S. address after your wife obtains her spousal visa and you paid the $165 Green Card fee.

Thank you very much for your reply. So, basically, the I-130 will get us the spousal visa and only from the US we can apply for the Green Card (with the I-485)? We don't have a set date to move to the US yet. Do you know how long the spousal visa would be valid for?

Also, I have a question about one of the questions on the I-130. It's #2 under section D. My wife actually had a Green Card, but we had to abandon it because we moved to Japan. So, this questions asks for the "...name,date and place of filing and result". I am not sure of the exact date we filed. Can I use the date my wife's old Green Card was issued on? As for the name and place...would that be the name of the building and city of where we filed (had our interview)?

I am a US citizen and my wife and I are currently living in Japan and we will move back to the US in a few months. I am in the process of submitting the necessary forms to being the green card application process. I called both the embassy here in Tokyo and USCIS. I thought that I just needed to submit an I-130 and two G-325A forms (one for myself and one for my wife), but do I also have to submit a form I-1485?

If my wife would like to work in the US after we move, are there any other forms to submit as well? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide...
