    My parents entered US recently after getting their immigrant visas:
    do they have to apply for SSN cards or do they get it automatically( they did fill some paperwork at the port of entry with immigration officer).

    any help will be appreciated.

    Social Security Numbers

    They'll need to apply for social security numbers/cards at the local social security office. They'll probably need copies and/or originals of some of their immigrant visa approval paperwork to prove that they're here legitimately when applying for the SSN.

    You can find out more info on how to get a SSN/card here:

    If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security must see your current U.S. immigration documents. Acceptable documents from the Department of Homeland Security include your:

    Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport);
    I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or
    Work permit card (I-766 or I-688B).

      Rstlne,

      As I know, they will not get the SSN. They still need to go to apply the SSN in person. Let me know if I am wrong.

      Thanks,
