Applying GC for mother-in-law who is a widow

We are planning to apply Green card for my mother-in-law who is a widow. Father-in-law passed away in 2006. Do we need both marriage certificate and death certificate or will it be sufficient if we just apply with death certificate

Why is death certificate needed in this case?

All he needs to prove that she is his mother. Therefore, his birth certificate showing who his mother should be enough.
