  • Green card for my mom

I’d like to start the process of applying for a green card for my mom. A bit of background: I’m a US citizen (naturalized); over 21 years old. My mom is widowed, doesn’t have other children, I’m the single child. She lives abroad but occasionally comes for visit me on her tourist visa.

What are the steps that I should take to start the process, and what are the required documents?

Here is what I learned so far:

    1) I need to file I-130 petition. The accompanying proof of 1) relationship is my birth certificate with my mom’s name. Does that need to have certified translation? And I need either my passport or naturalization certificate copy. What other documents are required? About how long does the petition take to process?

    2) do I file form I-284 to sponsor my relative after the I-130 is approved?

Am I missing major steps to start this process?
