GC application from India

Hi,
I am on L1B and my I-94 expires DEC, 2007. My employer is a US based company with development centers in India.
My employer has decided to apply for my GC this week (June 19) in PERM. But, I had decided to relocate (for 1 year) to India in August, 2006. My plan is stay with my parents for atleast one year in India and come back to US to work for the same employer. This is not a problem because my employer has Indian subsidiaries where I can work.
I have not communicated my relocation plans yet to my employer.

Questions
1. Can my employer continue to process my GC while I am in India temp.?
2. At what stages during the GC processing do I need to be present physically in the US?
3. What are the chances that I will get through the first few stages of GC process before August 30th, 2006. (note: my company is in NJ).?

Quick feed-back.
You can stay in India and you can apply even from India based on Consular Process(CP) but your employed needs to show that you are working for them or have a plan to bring you back.

I do not see you can clear any stages before Aug 2006. It is long proceed.
BTW did you file I -140??
