  • IV appointment - missing document

I have the IV appointment due in two weeks for my mother. One of the documents needed is the marriage termination document (my father passed away several years ago). Unfortunately, I have not been able to secure his death certificate. It doesn't look likely that I will be able to obtain a duplicate one in time.

What are my options? Can I get an affidavit from a relative (my mother's sibling) and would that suffice?

    Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

    Best regards

    Civil Documents:

I was able to dig out some document that referenced the event. At the interview, they only kept the photocopy. Didnt even look at the original.

Birth certificate: They looked at the NABC and the secondary evidence (School leaving certificate had the birthdate). Affidavits etc were not asked for - Waste of time and money.

Nothing about finances as I-864 was already on file.

Passport Police Clearance Certificate needs to be submitted in original. They kept this.

    Interview:

    - Asked if my mother overstayed. She had stayed but had an approval for extended stay (she didnt have that evidence on her and they didnt ask for it)

    - What are your children doing? Son's path to citizenship.

    - Asked my mom's maternal and paternal grandfathers' names. (dont know how that was relevant to anything, probably just idle chat...)

    Conclusion:

    - Dont worry about things like spelling differences on names. Affidavits for that are not worth the effort, time and money. My birth certificate spells my mom's name one way, her NABC spells it differently and the secondary evidence (School Leaving Certificate) spells it differently. We didnt have any affidavit to reconcile all these.

It took just about a year to get the whole thing completed. Six months for the I-130 and six months for the rest.

    Cheers
