  • Immigrant visa (IR-2) expired, can I still use the temporary I-551 for re-entry?

I've been in the US for nearly six months and haven't gotten the green card yet, and my IR-2 immigrant visa is expiring soon. Though, I have to go back to Thailand for personal reasons. Will I be able to use the temporary I-551 on my visa ("UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-551 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR 1 YEAR.") even though the immigrant visa is already expired to re-enter the United States after I get back from Thailand?

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry for bad English, not my native language.

    Pretty good English bro!

Yes, you can use the endorsed visa for one year after endorsement (reference the date on the admission stamp on the page next to the visa sticker)

A machine-readable immigrant visa (MRIV) usually has the following text on it: “UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-551 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR 1 YEAR.” When a new immigrant first enters the U.S., U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will stamp the passport with an admission stamp that indicates the immigrant has permanent resident status and has the date the new immigrant entered the U.S.

If that endorsement is expiring soon, make an Infopass appointment at a USCIS Field Office, and ask for a new I-551 stamp.

Thanks for the compliment and the quick reply! Cheers
