PCC from local Police is very important otherwise they will not isssue VISA. Today I went for CP interview at Mumbai consulate and they did not give me (not only me but everybody who does not have local PCC) VISA because I could not produce local PCC for my wife. They told me to come back with local PCC and complete the rest of the processing.

PCC Must
I think this issue has to be taken to higher authorities in Mumbai Police. My brother had approached local police station and their head quarters but at both places they refused to issue police clearance certificate asking him to apply at regional passport office. I think this problem is limited to Maharashtra state only since I know couple of friends from Gujrat and Culcutta who got PCCs from local police stations. Is there anyone, who was able to obtain it in Mumbai? please let us know.

PCC causing immense confusion
I've lived in Mumbai from the age of 16 to 21 and since then have been living in the US. I obtained the PCC from the Indian consulate here in New York. The PCC section of this site seems to say that I don't need to get any more PCCs from Mumbai local police or from Mumbai passport office. But this discussion seems to indicate that I do need to get those additional PCCs. Can someone please clarify ? I have only two weeks remaining before I leave for Mumbai for my consular processing interview.

Do we need PCC from all the places we lived?
Do we need PCC from all the places we lived for more than 6 months in India?. OR Just from the local police station of our residence?. I have lived in Hyderabad, Madras and Bangalore for 1 year each. Do I need PCC from all these places?.

Yes, PCC from all places is required
If you do need to get local PCC, then the rules are quite clear in saying that you need it from each place you lived at in India for 6 months or more. What I am not sure about is whether folks living in the US need to get local PCC at all, if they already have PCC from the Indian consulate here in the US.

@#%$ testimony
VikasC, rajeevsh does mention that you need US PCC as well as local PCC. However, it is not obvious from his original post. He mentions that they refused him the visa because he couldn't produce his wife's local PCC ( however, he doesn't mention whether his wife had her US-issued PCC ). rajeevsh, can you clarify ? If what you say is true, the PCC section of this web site needs to be changed because it will misguide people.
Anyway, the bigger problem seems to be that Mumbai police is not issuing PCC to individuals for consular processing ( my dad asked them about PCC recently ). And at this point, it's not clear whether a refusal of issuance letter from Mumbai police will do.

resided for 6 months - applies only for abroad.
drashwin,
I think, we need PCC from all the places lived more than 6 months abroad. If we live only in Inida, then a PCC from local police station serving our residence is enough. Here is what I read from American Consulate's website.
if the applicant has resided abroad since the age of 16 for periods of six months or more, then a police certificate might be required from that country, depending on which country it was.
All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and over, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the Local Passport Office. Applicants whose Indian passport was issued within the past six months may present just the Passport Office Police Certificate, and need not obtain additional police clearances. Applicants over age 16, whose passports were issued more that six months previous to visa application, must also obtain a police clearance from the District Police Office serving the applicant's place of residence.
So, what do you think?

How many PCCs?
Do we have to supply PCC from all the places where we stayed more than 6 months since the age of 16 ? I've never stayed in my residence in Orissa. All I stayed outside either for studies or for job. Do I need to get the cecrtificate from orissa OR from all other places ?
Can someone please clarify

Hmm, not sure
I don't think you need PCC from all the places you live in India for more than 6 months. It applies only if you have lived in abroad for more than 6 months, you need PCC from all the conutries you lived. Any comments?.
From consulate website:
if the applicant has resided abroad since the age of 16 for periods of six months or more, then a police certificate might be required from that country, depending on which country it was.

Re: Hmm, not sure
According to my attorney, you must get it for each permanent home you had established. I am actually planning to get multiple PCCs from Mumbai itself ( i.e., if Mumbai police does in fact issue PCCs ) because apart from my permanent home, I lived in a hostel for 4 years during my undergrad years. Same for my wife - she is planning to get one for her permanent home in Pune and one for her undergrad hostel stay in Mumbai. If anyone can prove otherwise, it will save us a lot of trouble, but I have not seen anything so far indicating otherwise.
