I130 approved what next?

okay so my I130 was approved now my lawyer told me that because i came illegally to the US i have to go back to Mexico and wait for a visa number. My question is that if i can file the I824 here in the United States when is it when i have to go to Mexico? what is the chance that i can come back to the US to be with my mother.

You have to go to Mexico to do the actual consular processing and get immigrant visa.
