This is not a direct answer to your question though -- if you are coming to Sydney before x'mas then you might be lucky to get a ok deal directly from Japan Airlines or Air NewZealand. Do try the good old Qantas - you never know when they can surprise you with a good deal. I've gotten really great deals flying from Mel/Syd to San Francisco and back from JAL.

I find the fare from Australia to US is about 50% of the fare from US to Australia for the same date. The air newzealand is charging US$1,700+ for Christmas season or US$1,300 for non changable ticket for travel before 7 Dec. I have enough frequent flyer points with Qantas and Ansett Australia but my experience tells me that they will not have any award seat available during the golden season. JAL gives me a quote for US$2,000+.
