consular processing - entry within 6 months

Hello,

My mom has been granted a IV which expires in May 08, but I have been posted to a foreign country for 9 months now and will be leaving the US

Pls advise if there is a way to extend the 6 month period of her IV by another 6 months and the procedures for doing so. also, if she has to come in before May 08, can she enter and leave in a week after getting her reentry permit.

Immigrant visas cannot be extended. If the visa is not used within its period of validity, you must return it to the consular office for cancellation, along with a note explaining the reasons why the visa was not used. Upon return of the visa and explanation, they will inform you as to the requirements needed to have a new visa issued. Usually at least the visa fee is required to be paid, and possibly a new medical examination.
