  • SB-1: Obtaining new green card after entry

An elderly family member was successfully granted and issued an SB-1 visa in Nov. 2023 and entered the USA one month later. CBP officer at port of entry stamped passport with temporary I-551 good for 1 year and gave no further instructions. Prior green card (before SB-1 application was filed) doesn't expire for 2 more years, but has a different UCSIS ID# from the one on the SB-1 visa.

Do we simply resume use of the unexpired green card with its original UCSIS ID#, and then file an I-90 application close to its expiration date? Or do we need to file an I-90 now?

If the previous green card is still valid and has not been physically revoked, it might still be used as identification or proof of status until its expiration. However, since the SB-1 visa process might have effectively replaced the old green card, it's best to get confirmation from USCIS. tunnel rush
