Passport renewal but no available marriage certificate

Hi,

I am a married woman trying to get my passport renewed after 10 years. I submitted my application to the San Francisco location with the church issued marriage certificate but it was rejected saying a government issued one is required. But we do not have a government issued marriage certificate.
I am not particular about having my spouse's name endorsed in the passport if there is a way out. But I don't see an option to do that. Please help.

Also, we are travelling to India in April and returning in May. My passport expires in September. Will I be allowed back into US?

Your best bet would be to apply for passport renewal in India under tatkaal scheme. If you do not have marriage certificate, get one while in India or I am sure there will be an alternative in India like an affidavit etc. Good luck.
You have not mentioned your visa type or your current status. If you are on a visa (H1/L1), don't take chances while coming back to US with "soon to be expired" passport. Sometimes, they give I-94 with validity till your passport expiry date at port of entry.
