  • Netherlands consulate lost our passports

    Hello,

    This is my case:

I and my wife are here on H1B & H4 respectively. We are going to India for good in April and on the way, we thought it would be nice to do a Europe trip. So we had applied for a Schengen Visa at Consulate of Netherlands in Atlanta. Netherland consulate forwarded our passports to their embassy in Washington DC where our visa was stamped. Passports were then sent back to Netherlands consulate in Atlanta. Consulate put our passports in a fedex dropbox with a pre-paid label on it on Feb 20th, Friday. But so far, the label has not been scanned - which means, nobody picked it up or somebody missed to scan. Anyway consulate is 100% sure that they dropped the passports in the fedex dropbox and fedex guys obviously dont take any responsibility saying they have never received the package. So, it is kind of a dead end.
Today is Feb 26th and we still have no idea where our passports are. Consulate suggested to wait for 2-3 more days.

We have only a month before the travel. Netherlands consulate said, they can get duplicate stamping (Schengen) within 2-3 days. Netherlands consulate offered to contact Indian embassy and do whatever they can to expedite the process of issuing replacement passport.

    1) Do you guys think it is practical to get a replacement indian passport so quickly that we dont have to disturb our travel plans? Do you think a recommendation from Netherlands embassy would help to get us the tatkal provision? We cant delay reaching in India as it is my sister's engagement.
    2) Or should we kill our Europe trip dreams and go to India with an emergency travel document?

Looking forward to your insights and thoughts,
    Thanks,
    Vishnu
