Minor Damage in Indian Passport & H1B Extension petition

Hi Folks,

My employer has filed for H1B extension, and I expect to receive I-797 (hopefully) in 2-4 weeks. There is a small tear in one of the empty pages of my Indian passport - the passport is valid till April 2020. I just noticed this tear, and would like to apply for a duplicate passport ASAP. I have few questions:

1. Should I wait until I get I797 to apply for the duplicate passport?
2. Does duplicate passport have a different number? If yes, could it affect my H1B extension petition or visa stamping?
3. I am under SFO jurisdiction. Does anyone have experience with Affidavit of No Status? Does one need it if they have I797 approval notice?

I would highly appreciate if someone could please help me with my query.
