  • Renunciation - US naturalized in 2001

Hi there - i got my us citizenship through naturalization about 15 years back in 2001. I have travelled since then to India on my US passport. Now when i am getting ready to renew my tourist visa, i read about the renunciation, which was supposed to take place within 3 yrs after Naturalization. I was not aware of this law, and i do see that i have the indian passport that expired in 2004, but no cancellation.
Will i be charged the $250 penalty? Is there any way around it.

My husband's situation is similar, but the difference is that he has lost his expired Indian passport, and we dont recall doing the renuncation for him either. what should he do?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked ckgs's website? It should have details on applying for renunciation with or without passport and unfortunately you have to pay the penalty.

Please take a look on CKGS website. They explain it very well. Most likely you have to pay only fee but no fine.
