  • Indian Visa and OCI

I got naturalized last week and now I plan to travel to India in Christmas timeframe...
I went to the CKGS website and read a lot about a lot of things and I think i confused myself
I just want to make sure I understand this right. Please help.
This is what I need to do to travel to India in Dec ( and also get my OCI card as soon as I can )

Step 1. I should apply for renunciation of Indian Citizenship. How long doe that process take?

Step 2. After I get my renunciation certificate I should apply for a tourist visa to India.
    takes 2 weeks I think.

Step 3: After I get my Indian visa apply for an OCI card.

    Is my plan correct?

    Thanks

Well, you kind of figured out the steps correctly.

Renunciation processing times are posted in CKGS website for each mission (NY, TX etc). It might take 7 to 10 days.

You can apply for OCI after you return from India trip.

I can't say your steps are wrong as you surely can go that route, but you can also do it another way which will save you some time and money. You probably need to get a visa for your travel in December but I would suggest you to go ahead and apply for OCI ASAP (This has nothing to do with your visa and you can travel with a visa while your OCI application is being processed). If you cando a walk in submition, even better. Applying immediately might save you some time which you have to wait anyways. If you are lucky you might get your OCI before christmans, if not you can use your visa. You can renounce Indian citizenship and apply for OCI simultaneously (pay only one service charge to CKGS). You need to prepare two separate sets of documents, one set for the rununciation and the other one for OCI, take two money orders, one for $175.00 and another for $295.00. (You are paying the service fee only once so add that to only one of the MOs. cheapest way to pay, costs only 70 cents / MO at Walmart) and submit them at the same time.Hope that helps.

        Thanks gdr for your help.
I thought that both OCI and Indian visa application need the renunciation certificate so I won't be able to do application for Renunciation + OCI simultaneously as you mentioned. But I will go with your info.
So in this case Can I not do all three applications at the same time? Renunciation+ OCI + Indian Visa?
