  • Travelling with valid PIO

My kids PIO expire in 2020 and 2022. I see that in the Indian Embassy website they say converting to OCI is voluntary and optional. I want to use the PIO and have that expire and then apply for OCI (they will be over 16 by then). Are there any issues with my logic and travelling using PIO? Any help will be appreciated. This paper work is unbelievable and I also paid about $500 or so for each PIO. Now I have to pay another $20 each to convert with this paper work and my time too!!!

I too am in same boat for my 16 year old.

I have posted a thread below about this and one of the responses said PIO card is not valid past June 30 (per some internet posts).
I have been frantically searching for any clues and came across this link yesterday. It's an year old thread from different site but offers some relief. I plan to do some more diffing this weekend and may even write to MEA and/or MHA for clarification. But my sons are planning their trip in December 2016. Who knows what changes till then.

One needs to carry the passport for which PIO card was issued. There is passport number on inside of back-cover.

Edit: Looks like I can't post link to external site. Search for track itt (one word).com usa-discussion-forums

Admin, not sure if I'm violating TOS. Just trying to help.

Thanks for your response! Agree with the "One needs to carry the passport for which PIO card was issued. There is passport number on inside of back-cover." I don't see why there will be a problem if we do that. The SF embassy at one time had in their web site that there will be time extension till June to convert these. I am thinking, why are they giving time to convert?? what is wrong with a valid PIO?? To go a little deeper in to this, there are embassy gazette officers who put their signs on these - that's got to have some value to it then, right?

Please post what you find out in this thread.
