  • Why to switch to OCI from PIO for minors

As per regulations, PIO cards are deemed valid for lifetime. Whereas OCI need to be renewed at every renewal for passport. for kids they need to get new passport every 5 years. that means they will need to renew OCI every 5 years too. Why not just keep the current PIO card until they turn 20? wouldn't that be easier or am I missing something.

the in lieu of pio card for new OCI actually is benefiting you because the new OCI is not printing U-visa sticker to travel passport anymore, ppl no longer to transfer the U-visa sticker to passpoer renewal. in fact, old pio or oci is required to do endorsement after passport renewed, so I don't get your point to keep the pio card until age of 20, the endorsement is optional, to travel with multiple passport with valid visa is allowed to many countries, India is so special, they may reject you at custom. so the new oci is much better, it doesn't link to any specific passport, just travel with any valid passport.

my answer to you is, why not??

PIO doesn't require any sticker. Endoresement of new passport in PIO was 'recommended' but not required as long as original passport was also carried. I had traveled without endorsement without any issues. When you say new OCI is not linked to any specific passport, I don't get it. Don't you have to apply for OCI renewal whenever you get a new passport ? The biggest inconvenience with OCI is renewal every 5 years. So every 5 years I have to spend money and deal with inapt bureaucracy.
With PIO, I can take it with current passport and original passport against which PIO was issued. That's all.

So response to your answer is, why spend more money and deal with crooks and kings every 5 years if I don't have to ?

Stop spreading false information buddy. Do you have an OCI card yourself?? If you open the OCI card, you can see that the foreign passport number is printed in the OCI card on the last page. So why do you say that OCI doesn't link to any specific passport?

Also, it is a requirement as per Ministry of Home Affairs to transfer OCI to new passport everytime one obtains a new passport up to the age of 20 and once upon crossing the age of 50.

So, I agree with the original poster that it is inconvenient to have an OCI as compared to PIO. With PIO, all that one had to do was a simple endorsement of new passport. With OCI, one has to deal with the inefficient Indian bureaucracy again and provide tons of documents even to renew a valid OCI card.

I too agree with OP... but this site info is little disturbing now.

Modi said existing PIO is valid for lifetime.. then why to convert for something which is headache for both applications and consulates?

OCI has same requirements as PIO for endorsement, OCI is not mandatory to do endorsement same as PIO card. now new OCI card is not going to print a separate U-visa stick onto the match passport anymore, can be confirmed by any one received their new OCI card. so the new OCI can be travel with any valid passport without endorsement.

U visa is irrelevant for this discussion because PIO never required U visa (or any other visa) from get go.
about renewal, from your response I gather OCI doesn't need to be renewed whenever passport is renewed

However, as per San Fran consulate, instructions are complete opposite..

yes PIO card is never issued U-visa on passport, but is recommended to do endorsement when passport renewed. OCI has U-visa sticker, endorsement is same as PIO holder, not mandatory but recommend. don't argue with me, i know all the rules and what is the requirements on any VISA, Renunciation, PIO and OCIs. i am the expirenced consultant who only give you the true advice

appreciate that you are helping folks here with your advice. not trying to argue but merely pointing out facts. if you can include references when you state a rule/regulation, that will be helpful.
My statement still stands. If OCI is required to be renewed every 5 years for kids, it would be inferior option as opposed to PIO which does not require renewal (assuming they go back on Modi's promise of lifetime validity of PIO and invalidate PIO's). Would like to be proven otherwise though.
