  • Questions about minor PIO to OCI, travel to India and more

    Hello group,
my daughter born in USA in 2011, holds a US passport that expires on Dec 07, 2016. She also holds a PIO card for travel to India , valid till 2027. My questions are as follows. We are planning a trip to India in July 2016, returning August 2016.

    1) Does India require foreign citizens to hold passport with greater than 6 months validity, even if they are PIO card holders?. Will Indian immigration be okay with such an entry provided that the travel will not last for greater than 3 weeks. My daughters passport at time of entry will be less than 6 months valid.

    2) If I renew my daughter's passport, do I need a new PIO endorsement ?, or should I carry both her passports and PIO card for entry to India ?. Do I need to take into account, the PIO to OCI conversion deadline of June 30?, and apply for a OCI with a new US passport?. Given that the current OCI processing time frame is greater than 60 days or so, do i have to carry OCI application receipt , along with old US passport, new US Passport, PIO card for entry into India ?

    answer to your Question
    1) Yes. travel document must be valid at least 6 months regardless
    2) N/A. there's no more PIO endorsement applicable, and is not mandatory to apply for in lieu of PIO. since travel date is about 3 months, you should apply for new OCI in lieu of PIO card as cheap as only $60. in case of travel, the OCI is not ready you still have the PIO card as a visa. but before you apply, you must renewal the current passport because OCI is required the current passport is grater than 8 months

You are fine. Should not worry. You can use existing PIO card for 3 weeks. my family just travelled with PIO and old passport with less than 6 months validity.

Here is a link on the OCI card. It will be extended again.
