URGENT: GC holder - Travel on expired Indian passport from US to India

My friend and his wife are Green Card holders with Indian passports. Their child is a US citizen with US passport.
They booked tickets to India for tonight, but just realized that the wife's passport expired 2 months back. The friend & child's passport are fine.

Is there any way they can travel to India ? Will they be denied getting onto the plane in US itself, or can they travel to India and plead their case with authorities over there?

Is it possible to apply under Tatkal scheme to renew passport in Indian embassy in USA, and request them to make an exception to travel on expired passport ?

I don't think they would let her get on the plane. The best bet is to contact Indian Consulate but I doubt they would consider this as an emergency.
