OCI in lieu of PIO card - NY consulate

Hi,

question regarding applying for OCI in lieu of PIO card.

Do I need to send
1. Original Passport or copy of passport
2. Original PIO or copy of PIO

Kindly respond since the OCI application on government web says

In case of applications for registration as Overseas Citizen of India Cardholder in lieu of PIO
card, only copies of the following documents to be attached:-
Valid passport of the applicant
Valid PIO card of the applicant.

However CKGS web site says original passport and PIO

I think you have to send back original for matching

My brother had to do that a few months back... it really makes you hold your breath that you will get it back, but he did, and was approved.
