OCI -Is US passport required?

I am mailing in my documents after doing the online application and paying the fee online. The checklist asks for 01 Original and 01 copy of US passport.
Do I have to mail in my US passport with my forms?

I did a walk-in at NY and I was asked to submit the original US PP with OCI application. I submitted it on Feb 3, 2017, haven't got it back yet, but I was told that I should get it within 10 days.
Some folks have mentioned in the thread I created, and in other threads, that their OCI process was put on hold until they sent in their original US PP. The process resumed only after they sent in their original US PP. If you decide to not send in your US PP, please post your experience on how it progresses.

You have to mail your original US Passport with your application. I just mailed my passport along with my application yesterday. Are you sure that they will send it back in 10 days? I tried calling CKGS today, but couldn't wait that long.

first of all, apologize for incorrect message that I said no original passport for OCI application. the update is only San Francisco Consular is not accepting passport for OCI, all other locations are asking for passport with OCI application.
