Travel to India from USA and back - Passport validity

Hello

My wife is a US Passport holder. She also is a OCI. Her US passport expires Sept 5th 2017. We are travelling to India July 28th and expect to be back Aug 22nd in the USA. Is there a problem in this travel with the limited validity of the passport? Is it okay to apply for renewal after we return back or should we renew prior to be safe? Considering that it may take 6 weeks, it may be a little on the edge and hence my question.

Since I'm one who got stuck in a country once, because my passport expired, I would advise to renew before you travel. Anything can happen while away, so it's better to prepare for the unknown.
