  • OCI application - Hyphenated Last Name

I have a very peculiar problem with OCI application.
Applying for OCI for my kids (US citizens).
Kids have a hyphenated last name (MyLastName-WifesLastName)
    Eg: Smith-Miller

The problem is that the OCI application form on both the CKGS website and the Govt of India website allows only letters and numbers.
The CKGS website automatically deletes the hyphen
The govt webite lets me enter the hyphen but says "Only letters/numbers allowed"

    Anybody else face this issue?
I have tried contacting CKGS but haven't gotten an useful response.

If I enter something like "Smith Miller" as last name, when the forms are printed out it splits and uses "Smith" as last name and Miller as part of first name.
If I enter something like "SmithMiller" as last name, I am sure they are going to say it doesnt match passport.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

The OCI card has two lines. One for "Surname" and another for "Given name(s)". What ever you fill in will come in that specific line. It is not one line with "first name" "last name".

My first name is two words. I have my passport showing 2 words, but some airlines don't allow two. I have my first names(!) printed with no spaces in some airline tickets/boarding passes. No one questioned ever. Some airlines skip the second word in the first name and no one questioned that either.

pdx_sam would love to hear how you/your wife resolved this hyphenation issue. Seeing a similar issue on other Indian Consulate portals.
      Thanks!
