  • OCI question

I want to apply for OCI card and one of the eligibilty is to provide the Indian passport details, my passport was taken away by the Australian embassy when I applied for citizenship there 20 years ago. When I called indian embassy they say that my passport shouldn't have been taken, the Australian embassy acknowledged that's the policy of their embassy.

The question is what I should do now and I am not getting any help from the Indian embassy.

    Please advise.

Does the Australian government still have your passport, or copies of it in their files? If so, you can request a certified copy from them.

If not, you can request a letter from them stating the facts of how the passport was lost and any details they have in their records to show that you previously had an Indian passport.

The Indian embassy is right - passports belong to the issuing country so the Australians shouldn't have taken yours. But if the Indians aren't providing assistance to fix that problem, then at least it is reasonable to ask them to accept an alternate form of proof of your Indian origin.

    Hope this helps,
