Expiry date on passport close to travel date

My wife's Indian passport expires in October 2007. She is a Green Card holder in the US and is planning to travel to India between May-July 2007. Can she use the current passport for her travel to India and get a new passport when she gets back to the US? I have heard that the Indian passport should be valid atleast for 6 months from the travel date. Is it true? The Chicago Indian consulate doesn't bother to respond to our questions. Thanks for your help.

should not be a problem, as she is traveling on GC. It is true only when traveling on NIV like H1 H4 L1 etc.

The 6 months validity of Indian passport applies when travelling from home country to other nations.

While travelling to home county ie Indian Citizen even with one day validaty is enough to travel to home country
