  • Indian passport for US born baby

    Hi,
I am on H1B, my wife on H4 and we had a baby born last month born in US. I am planning to return back to India for good in 2-3 years. Therefore I am thinking of getting an Indian Passport for my baby

    1. From the other discussion threads, looks like getting Indian Passport is difficult. But if I do manage to get Indian passport, is it possible for my baby to apply for a US citizenship in future when she turns 18 years.

    2. If I opt for a US passport, then my baby is eligible only for PIO. OCI is not possible even though both parents are Indian citizens. Is that correct ?

    3. Lets say I settle down in India after 2-3 years and my baby has a US passport and a PIO. In future, will it affect her schooling & education - will she be eligible for the normal General category seats in colleges or will she qualify only for NRI/foreign quota.

you can opt for Indian passport by applying at Indian Consulate. The only problem is that the US consulate will not issue a visa to the baby and will insist that you get a US passport.

The baby will never lose US citizenship so dont worry about that.

OCI is not given to a baby who has Indian parents. with PIO card you should be able to avail all benefits of Indian education
