  • Indian Passport expiry and US travel

    Hello friends,

I need advice on travel for my parents from Indian to US. They are planning to visit in July'08 and return Nov'08 (four months)

    1. Their passport is expiring in Dec'08. Since I have read in other forum discussions that the validity should be atleast six month from the date of travel, they do not meet this guideline. Will this be an issue? If yes, will it be issue in India or the US?

    2. If they decide to renew the passport now since they still have almost a month and half before travel, will they receive the new passports in time for travel?

    3. What is the procedure in India for renewing the Passport? Is there a tatkal scheme? Once they renew the Passport, will the old Passport be given back since it has the US visa?

    4. Once parents receive the new passport, do they need to send it to the US embassy to change the passport number on the US Visa.

I am concerned that this whole process may take a long time.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

      Clarification

Thanks for the link, but the details provided in that thread are more related to US GC holders on Indian Passport. In my situation, my parents have Indian Passport and US Visitor Visa, so will it not be a different situation?

      Please advice.

      Thanks again

It does not change. Infact, the person on the thread revealed that he is GC holder in the last post.

Just to let you know that it is important for the passport to be valid for 6 months from the date of travel. This was confirmed by the US consulate in Mumbai. They may not check it at the POE, but it is better to be safe than feel sorry

          Thanks

US POE requires a valid passport only. There is no mention of 6 month validity by any official source. It is just that CBP may issue I-94 only till DOE of passport which provides opportunity for concern.

If there is time, renew the passport to ease your worries.

Thanks for the link. Immihelp also has this information and India is exempt from the 6 month rule.
