Renewal Of Indian Passport

Hi
I am a GC holder now but I came to USA on student visa. Now my Passport expires in Feb-2010 .

-So is it necessary to send a ORIGINAL GREEN CARD for renewal of PASSPORT?

If any one has experience let me know
