passport renewal and H1B VISA PERIOD

I am on an H1B Visa valid until july 2010 and my passport was expiring in april 2010.I requested for renewal for 10 yrs and got my passport back renewed for 1 yr with reason given as -it is a reference case since the old passport was not issued by this new york indian consulate and that they have issued it for 1 yr since I do not have a valid us visa status.am advised to apply for extension of validity as soon as my us visa is approved.
My question is can they only extend my passport till the period of my H1B visa in which case can I only apply for extension of validity when i get my next job and h1b and then can only get it for 3 years again at that point?
