OCI Stamping on US Passport

My OCI has been granted and the papers have been mailed out from New Delhi on 30-SEP-2009. They have not arrived here in Washington DC yet. I believe I have to send my US passport to get U Visa stamped once I see documents has reached DC and I see in the Online Status Inquiry site that I should mail my Original US Passports. I need to have this card asap and need to go to India in another week or so. Can I mail my passport to DC right now to same some time or should I have to wait for instructions to appear online? I read somewhere that I can take a printout of online OCI inquiry screen and send the passports in advance so that they have my passport by the time they my OCI from India.

Can someone discuss how they got their OCI stampings done and what was the timeline.

You need to wait until the online status shows that they have received the passport. In trying to save time, you may lose a lot of time if they misplace your passports if they are received earlier than required.
