  • Tourist visa to India - registration

I just got my 10-year multiple entry tourist visa and will be visiting India for 2 weeks. My visa says "Registration required within 14 days of arrival in India for visas valid for more than 180 days." Do I need to register? I'll be there for only 14 days. But my visa is valid for 10 years, i.e. "more than 180 days".

I'm confused because my wife's visa (issued 2003) says "Registration not required if continuous stay does not exceed 180 days."

I hope this is merely a semantic difference. Can someone please clarify?

You do not need to register. The quote you mention is unfortunately misleading and is part of the standard verbiage on the visa sticker. The '...visas valid for more than 180 days.' refers to visas whose terms allows for continuous visits of more than 180 days. As the limit on Tourist visas is 180 days per visit, regardless of overall visa length, it does not apply to you.

Curt, thanks. That's a relief. I knew you have to register only if you stay longer than 6 months but when I saw the language "visas valid for more than 180 days" I thought it was a new regulation. They should have stuck to the old language instead of confusing people.
