  • Surrender Certificate - quick question

    Hi

I already have a CANCELLED Indian passport. I got it cancelled as part of OCI processing last year. As per /indian-citizenship-renunciation-certificate/ I do not have to pay the service fee to get the certificate, however the page also mentions "you have to pay the service fee, even if you surrender the Indian passport immediately after aquiring a foreign citizenship". Could you please clarify?

    Regards,
    -Praveen

There's some new info here, though not from a GoI website:

NRIs have asked India to revisit new rules that require them to surrender Indian passports on getting US citizenship. Top recipients of remittances | Forex Converter

      Please help -
Is 'Surrender Certificate' a physical document or just a stamp in the Indian passport saying canceled on aquiring US citizenship? TIA

        No it is not

The surrender certificate and the stamp are two different things as far as I know. I already have a cancelled/stamped passport and the consulate is still advising me to get the certificate. All I want to know is - do I still need to pay 175$ to get the certificate.

No, you don't have to pay $175 in that case.

          It is mentioned at /indian-citizenship-renunciation-certificate/

Thanks for the replies. There still seems to be a lot of confusion in regards to renunciation of Indian citizenship even at the Travisa outsourcing office in SF. Here's my situation: I acquired USC in 01/2010 and my last Indian passport expired in 08/2009. Recently, I traveled to SF to get my visa stamped and had to pay $175 to renounce Indian citizenship plus the cost of a 6 month entry visa. The only changes I see in my Indian passport are couple of stamps in the first and last pages stating ' Passport canceled....' and there are no edges cut as stated in this webpage:
            /sample-cancelled-indian-passport/
and there is no such thing as a physical 'Surrender Certificate'
I am just hoping the Travisa office didn't miss anything here. Thanks.

              professorm,

              That is not true.

The only time it is free is that if you already had your passport cancelled before this rule became effective.

Yup. If you already have a cancelled passport, there should be no fee for the certifcate.

I already have OCI and the consulate still advising me to get the certificate. I wonder what kind of documentation I would need to send? Certainly not the same BUNCH that needs to be send if you have not cancelled yet?

Same as every one else except one thing. Instead of non-cancelled passport, you will send the cancelled passport.
