  • Surrender Certificate (Washington DC)

    Hi,

I'm applying for an OCI but I also need to get my passport canceled. The Embassy of India Washington DC site states that if you don't want a surrender certificate, you can send your Indian passport along with the $175.00 fee and have the passport canceled and sent back with the OCI.

It seems to me, however, that in the long run, having the surrender certificate would probably be a good idea.

If I were to send the renunciation form with my OCI application, does anybody know if the embassy would sign and stamp the bottom of the form (which is the surrender certificate) and send that back with the OCI?

I guess my other option is to send the renunciation form separately with the Indian passport and wait for the surrender certificate and then apply for the OCI. Any ideas on how long it typically takes to get the Indian passport canceled along with the surrender certificate? Thanks.

The best thing to do is the send the surrender certificate form first with passports. Get the certificate and cancelled passport before applying for OCI. (This would be help in case you move to another Consulate jurisdiction or if the rules at Embassy in DC change later.)

It is really impossible to give an idea of the timings as everything is so dynamic currently.
