  • surrender certificate question

I never held Indian Passport. Instead, my name was in mother's passport when I came to USA at young age. I became US citizen 20 years ago and OCI 3 years ago.

Do I need a surrender certificate? What do I surrender? The surrender form asks for passport number, date, etc.

Can I travel to to India with that OCI any more? Will the immigration in Mumbai there bother me?

Email to San Francisco consulate has been ignored. They ignore emails if they feel the answer is on their site! There is no answer there though for my type of case.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Surrender Certificate

I saw below inscript regarding Surrender Certificate at CGI website today....

Renunciation of Indian Citizenship and Surrender Certificate for Passports

Indian citizens acquiring foreign citizenship are required to renounce their Indian citizenship and surrender their Indian passports for cancellation. They are issued a surrender certificate by the Consulate.

Till 31st May, 2010, the fee applicable for renunciation of Indian citizenship and obtaining a surrender certificate was US $ 175. However, with effect from 1st June, 2010, the Government of India has made some relaxations in regard to the rules.

In this regard, please note that:

    · Citizens of Indian origin who acquired US citizenship on or before 31st May, 2010 should approach the Consulate for cancelling their passports if this has not been already done. They will have to pay cancellation charge of US $ 20 per person in addition to mailing charges of US $ 20.

    · Indian citizens acquiring citizenship on or after 1st June, 2010 will have to pay a renunciation fee of US $ 175 per person (in addition to mailing charges of US $ 20 for cancellation of Indian passports). Penalties would be applicable in case such passports are not surrendered within 90 days of acquiring foreign citizenship.

    · US citizens of Indian origin who hold OCI/PIO cards or long-term Indian visas do not need a surrender certificate.

    · US citizens who are of Indian origin and have a cancelled stamp in their expired passport also do not need a surrender certificate.

    I hope this helps...Regards CBUS

      surrender certificate rules

Thanks for the response. Which CGI is this information from? The CGI San Francisco has very little details posted.

Another issue - I have OCI and age 50 is on the horizon. At age 50, one needs new OCI card. They won't do this service without Surrender Certificate I am reading.

      Thanks again.

        Relax and travel!

The may ask for renunciation form when you use consulate services (which you may not need for years, by then all of these silly rules will be eliminated).
You never know what Indian govt will do changing rules at anytime.
BTW I will need their services at age 50 which is coming soon. I read one needs a new OCI booklet at that time. They never told me this in their rules when I got OCI originally!
