Can my US born son become an Indian citizen?

Hi,
My husband and myself are Indian citizens.My son was born in the USA, when we were there for a couple of years in 2005.After that we returned to India and have no plans to return to the USA. But since my son is an US citizen we have to keep registering at the FRRO (he has a PIO card)and applying for a new passport every 5 yrs.Also I am worried that his US citizenship will result is heavy expenses for his higher education.I want my son to be an Indian citizen as his parents are indian citizens and he is being brought up in India.Currently he has US passport. Can I surrender that passport and apply for an Indian passport for him?We are ready for him to surrender his US citizenship and aquire Indian citizenship.Please let us know what are our options. As per section 5(1) (a) & 5(1) (c) of the Citizenship Act, he/she (pio card holder) has to reside in India for minimum 7 years before making application for granting indian citizenship

thanks for the info.He has been in india for 3 yrs now,so in another 4 yrs we should be able to apply for citizenship.We did look for options like dual citizenship, but from what I understand there is no such thing in India, though some acts have been passed.Thanks again,

From what I know, the US law won't allow you to relinguish US citizenship on behalf of your child. Your child alone can decide on that matter when he reaches a certain age. If you have to apply for Indian passport, you will have to surrender your US passport, because Indian laws does not allow dual citizenship.
