  • surrender certificate question

    Hello Experts,

Here is my situation - I passed US citizenship interview on may 26th and immigration officer granted me the citizenship on that day. I received two letters from them - one is the interview results where its mentioned that "Your application has been recommended for approval" and other letter is for attending oath ceremony on so and so date. Now my question is although I received citizenship on May 28th, I went for Oath ceremony on June 11th. So when I apply for surrender certificate, should I send $20 check or $175 check. It would be nice if I save money here. I dont understand the funda that they have to increase the fees by so much. Can someone help me? Thanks.

You become US citizen only when you take the oath. Last year my husband passed all his things and got his date for the ceremony and I went a couple days later for my interview. There the officer asked if my husband was US citizen and I said yes and he asked for details and I said his oath ceremony is in a week. The officer corrected me saying that my husband does not become a citizen till he takes the oath. So thats how i know. I guess you would have to pay the $175 as you took the oath only after June 1st.
    I hope this helps.
