  • OCI re-issue for minor documents

    Hello,

Both parents are US citizens with OCI card. Child is 7 years US citizen and have OCI card but passport got expired and got new passport. So want to apply to re-issue OCI for my child

    1. For address of proof, can we submit one parent drivers license and does it needs to be notarized?
    2. Under "AFFIDAVIT IN LIEU OF ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS – NOTARIZED AND ORIGINAL the Affidavit in Lieu of Originals must list US passport as one of the documents", what documents should be listed under a,b c, d... affidavit form?
    A) Whose name needs to be filled in the swearing, the parents name or the minors' name?
    B) And this name would need to be filled in the first line and the line that says
"Subscribed and sworn to by ___________ before me on the _______ day of ______________, ____" right?
    C) And I guess the last part in the above line is asking for the date of signing?
    D) And there is another line below asking for a "Signature". Who needs to sign there? The person named above? (Parent or child?)
    E) And there is another line asking for "Printed Name". Whose name would go there?

    3. Do we need to send marriage certificate and should be notarized?
    4. Do we need to send birth certificate of child and should be notarized?
    5. Do we need to send both parents OCI card/Cancelled indian passport and should be notarized?
    6. What documents needs to be uploaded on gov. website?

    Really appreciate your help!

I was under the impression you upload new passport details but there is no reason to reissue a OCI card. Did I get this wrong?

I understand you are raising this because you are doing all this for your child. Ask your child to write her name on the form. Explain this to the notary. The library is the best place IMO for a notary. Also, your child has to write her name in the main application since she can write (I guess you are aware of that). I am happy to see they have this form now with a place for the notary to sign. You get the notary after you finish the application. Anything you are going to send as a copy should be listed in the AFFIDAVIT IN LIEU OF ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS – NOTARIZED AND ORIGINAL form. Get all those copies/certificates notarized, even though you are sending the form saying you are sending the copy instead of the original (unless someone shares a recent experience sending all copies without notarizing).

So, get started with the application, and you will figure out what certificates/forms you have to send. I think you have to upload the attached forms to the govt website and send them to VFS. It has been a while since I did it for my child's OCI renewal. I don't have the exact answers. Get it started.

You are correct. The OP here does NOT need to apply for a "re-issuance" till their child turns 20 and gets a new passport after that.

Never do more than required for ANY government paperwork. Be it USA or Indian governments.

India did away with the OCI Re-Issuance requirement for minors till 20 years age in April 2021. Stop the process and simply upload new passport information online. VFS Global and the Indian site that processes these will guide you and when you enter your child's OCI number, it should simply route you to updating the information v/s re-issuance.

You CAN apply for re-issue but you don't need to.
