  • Entry visa/OCI reqt for I131 supporting docs in SF

    Hi

I am about to apply for an entry visa for myself. I was born in India and came to the US in the early 1970s when I was 4 years old. San Francisco requires proof of lawful entry into the US. I don't have my original Indian passport when I entered the US, so I will have to apply to the USCIS for any documentation regarding my entry in the 1970s - I assume this will be an I131 form. Thankfully, the consulate says that applicants who entered the US before 1980 don't have to wait to get the documentation from USCIS. However, they list four or five documents and state that the applicant must provide at least one of the following:
    • Visa approval note
    • Copy of visa under which you first travelled to US
    • Certificates/degrees from institutions where you studied
    • Letters from institute confirming duration of enlistment
    • Certificate from employer confirming the fact of your authorized employment

What is a visa approval note?

Given that I was only 4 years old at the time, none of these documents apply in my case (I came to be with my family, not to work, got to school, etc). If I send in my visa/oci application without any of these supporting documents, are they going to reject my application? Should I just give them copies of my degrees, even though schooling occurred 2 decades after my arrival and wasn't the reason I came to this country?

    Thanks!

In addition to giving them Certificates/degrees from institutions where you studied, you can also supply your schooling records from the primary/secondary/higher secondary schools in USA where you underwent schooling. Also get a letter from your school stating that you indeed studied there during what periods and get Certificate from employer confirming the fact of your authorized employment.

    This should do.

    good luck

      Thank you for the feedback.

I have a few old documents - report cards, yearbook photos, etc. from pre-high school years. I feel strange asking my elementary school about my enrollment 30-40 years ago! At least from high school onward I can give copies of my degrees. I think I'll submit what I have instead of asking for "certificates" from my schools and workplaces and cross my fingers.
